Franconia Romantic Road

Franconia Romantic Road Saturday 12th to Friday 18th August 2017

Mancass in association with Andersons have organised this great 6 day tour to the Romantic Road in Bavaria. We are staying at a family run hotel  situated in the small village of Elsendorf in the heart of Franconia. Our hosts will give you a warm welcome, with good home cooking, its own micro brewery to quench your thirst and spotlessly clean rooms. From our pick up points we make our way south towards the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkstone making comfort stops enroute. After our 35 minute crossing we continue through France and Belgium towards Germany and our hotel for the next 5 nights. After arriving and checking in you will have time to unpack before enjoying a 3 course evening meal in the hotel. Included in this trip are the excursions listed below:

Wurtzburg

The city itself is set in a beautiful hilly location on a river and possesses a wealth of history, as well playing host to a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Residence palace.

It is also smack in the middle of one of Germany's biggest wine-producing areas

Founded in the 10th century, Würzburg served as the home of powerful prince-bishops for many centuries. It is renowned for the Residence, regarded as one of the finest palaces in Europe and a high point of Baroque art (also UNESCO cultural world heritage). Würzburg is also home to one of the oldest churches in Germany, built in the 8th century on top of a former pagan shrine. One of its most famous structures, Festung Marienberg, is a fortress which now surrounds the church

Nuremburg

This is a very special town, with a rich history.  When people think of Nuremberg, they usually think of gingerbread, toys, Christmas, the Reich Party Rally Grounds, or the Nuremberg Trials. But the old town of Nuremberg is much more than this and indeed Nuremberg probably comes closest to many tourists' expectations of a typical German city. On the one hand one can find half-timbered houses, gothic churches within a medival city wall in the shadow of the towering imperial castle, which was one of the most important residences of the emporers of the Holy Roman Empire. On the other hand Nuremberg and the surrounding cities are home to many well-known German companies, e.g. Adidas, Diehl, Faber-Castell, Playmobil, Puma and several divisions of industrial giant Siemens. Finally, Nuermberg even can live up to culinary expectations with breweries and beergarden and its most famous dish, the Nuremberg sausages with Sauerkraut.

The Zeppelin Field at the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg is a very special national heritage, as debates about the refurbishment of the severly damaged relics of the place are also of international interest.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

With barely 11,000 inhabitants, Rothenburg is perhaps the best-known small town in Germany. Every year, millions of visitors are captivated by the unique enchantment of the town with its fairytale skyline and its romantic, medieval architecture.

The thousand-year-old history of Rothenburg is linked with the idyll of a small town with an international outlook and a unique charm all of its own. Passing through its town gates, many people feel they have been transported into a bygone age of fairytales. Artists from all over the world have been inspired by Rothenburg since its rediscovery in the 19th century – the visitor encounters art and culture at every turn. The splendid renaissance facades, narrow alleys and hidden corners are now even more fascinating than ever and are sure to interest you!

Mystery trip

There is so much to see on the romantic road,

So we will choose somewhere that is really good,

Bad poetry I know but you get the idea

There may even be somewhere to get some beer.

Sadly its Saturday and  we have to leave our hosts and make our way back through France, to the Eurotunnel terminal for our crossing home.  We should arrive back late evening into Manchester.
