The Pairs Competition @ Stockport GC, Thursday October 28th 2021

The last Portland event of the season saw a great turnout with 42 golfers teeing off at Stockport. The course was in great condition and we were lucky with the weather.

The Saville “twins” Dave and Andy got proceedings underway and rushed out in a buggy to set the marks and nearest the pins. The only flaw in this process was the communications in letting people know which hole was to be the designated longest drive. This caused plenty of discussion in the bar later with people saying they would have tried harder had they known (yes!!). Whether it was this lack of knowledge or not,Rob Chadwick was unable to make it a hat trick of longest drive success’s as Howard Dixon ended his run.

Further aspersions were laid on the final four ball who managed between them to pick up (literally) three of the four nearest the pin prizes. (but we trust them)

The results were a close run thing with card playoffs being required to separate the first 6 pairs. Andy Minshull playing on his own due to unfortunate late withdrawal of partner Chris Murphy   briefly appeared in the prize money thanks to a ghost card being provided but lost out to Pete Derbyshire and Matt Biddle for 3^rd place. The first two were only separated by a single point on a back 9 card playoff with Terry Tobin and Steve Mainwaring losing out to Kevin Bolton and James Cleary.

Prize giving was delayed somewhat whilst a steward enquiry took place examining the card of Mel Garner and John Martin who submitted what appeared to be a winning score of 47 points before it was pointed out that they had introduced their own version of Stableford scoring by awarding double points on par 3 and par 5 holes. Once adjusted they disappeared down the scoreboard.

A really enjoyable end to the season with Captain Paul Sinnott handing over the reins to Ernie Rowlands, we are all looking forward to next year under his stewardship.
