Portland Cup @ Hart Common GC, 25th April 2025
Its been a while since we last played Hart Common but it was a welcome return. The first
encouraging sign was the traditional bacon butty starter was upgraded to a bacon, sausage and egg sandwich.
There was a couple of drop outs late in the day so the start sheet had to be amended, this caused a great deal of confusion among the players and we ended up with a 5 ball at the end which had to be split into a two and three ball.
On each fairway what appeared to be a stray animal of some description kept crossing back and forth, eventually we discovered that they used robotic mowers on each hole. I’m not sure how the sums compare to a team of greenkeepers but at least they don’t have holidays, though there may be sickness absence.

On to the day, once more a very close ending with just four points separating the top five finishers. Our Captain Jay Chambers managed to hold on to a one point lead from James Cleary, with three players then on same score just behind.
There were only three par threes on the course and despite three winners of nearest the pin, nobody managed a two. Therefore it will be a rollover at Royal Blackley where we play next for the Presidents Cup.
As the Captain couldn’t present to himself our handicaps secretary Kevin Bolton performed the honour.
