Tour of the RHS Garden Bridgewater, 11am, Saturday, 12th June 2021

Bridgewater will be the first new RHS garden in 18 years and will be truly unique, as it boasts a range of habitats from woods and lakes to streams and meadows. The ambition is to create one of the most beautiful and inspiring gardens.

History of Worsley New Hall - Once visited by Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, Worsley New Hall survived a fire and two World Wars before it was demolished in the 1940s

In its heydey, Worsley New Hall, standing in its glorious, formal landscaped gardens, was a notable residence of its era.
Just as grand as the house, the magnificent gardens were landscaped over a 50-year period. Landscape designer William Andrews Nesfield, one of the most sought-after of his profession at the time, was involved in the project from 1846.
Beyond the terraces, landscaped parkland extended to a lake, and by 1875 the lake had been enlarged and a grotto built on its island, which was reached by a footbridge.

Looking to the future - The master plan for RHS Garden Bridgewater will embrace the site's heritage while also giving it a future.
Commenting on the plans, broadcaster and RHS Vice President, Alan Titchmarsh MBE, said: 'The development of the RHS’ new fifth Garden will be the biggest hands-on gardening project the charity will have undertaken in its 211-year history. Watching how RHS Garden Bridgewater takes shape and grows is going to be fascinating, especially some of the major restoration projects like the Walled Kitchen Garden.'

Why not take this opportunity to take a guided tour of the site to see the progress that has been made in the creation and restoration of the landscaped gardens at

RHS Bridgewater.

We start our day by visiting Highclere Castle, the real ‘Downton Abbey’, and home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. We take a self-guided one-hour tour of the public rooms, including the state rooms and bedrooms where scenes for the show were filmed. We also explore the ‘Egyptian Exhibition’, located throughout the cellars, celebrating the 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun. There’s time to discover the ‘Capability Brown’ designed grounds, browse the gift shop where there are some non-fictional works written by the Countess herself, and perhaps stop for tea and cake at one of the tea rooms. In the afternoon we spend free time in the Cotswold villages of Shilton and Swinbrook. We also visit the picturesque village of Bampton where most of the outdoor scenes for ‘Downton Abbey’ were filmed, including St Mary’s Church, the village pub, the Library and Matthew Crawley’s house
